Government Funding Leaves Adelaide’s Grassroots Motorsport in the Dust

Off The Street Australia is calling on the South Australian Government to explain why millions of taxpayer dollars have been invested into privately-owned “showpiece” venues like The Bend Motorsport Park, while Adelaide International Raceway (AIR)—the backbone of grassroots motorsport in the state—remains neglected and in urgent need of support.

“The government found $75 million for a privately-owned track at Tailem Bend, but nothing for our city’s historic grassroots venue. This isn’t supporting motorsport—it’s picking political winners.”

While AIR is privately owned (by the Bob Jane Corporation), it has for decades served as the main venue for local car clubs, drag racing associations, burnout events, and grassroots racing in South Australia. For many, AIR is a “community track”—not by legal definition, but because it’s the only accessible and affordable home for hundreds of everyday racers and motoring clubs in Adelaide.

Meanwhile, the state government has poured massive sums—$75 million federally and $2 million in state funds—into The Bend Motorsport Park, a modern private facility with high-end infrastructure and premium events. These funding announcements have become political centrepieces, often used for photo opportunities and headline-grabbing promises in the lead-up to elections.

“Public money should support the whole motorsport ecosystem, not just high-profile private venues. The future of club racing, youth development, and affordable motorsport is under threat if our main grassroots venue is left to decay.”

Key Facts:

  • $75 million in federal and state funding for The Bend Motorsport Park, a private, premium facility.

  • $2 million more for the new dragway at The Bend (2023).

  • ZERO funding for Adelaide International Raceway, despite its essential role as the community-access motorsport venue for Adelaide and SA.

  • AIR is at risk of closure or further decline, putting club motorsport, drag racing, and entry-level racing in jeopardy.

OFF THE STREET AUSTRALIA calls for:

  • Transparent funding decisions—release all documents showing how motorsport investments were chosen.

  • A fair funding model to maintain and upgrade all of South Australia’s motorsport venues, including those serving the grassroots and club level.

  • Recognition of the true community role played by AIR and similar venues—regardless of legal ownership.

“Motorsport in South Australia needs more than a corporate showcase. It needs real support for the venues where the next generation learns, competes, and belongs.”
